Country songs about starting over

Most songs about starting over stop at the decision. The hard part is the ninety days after it, and that is where these live.

Why the decision is the easy part

A song that ends on the resolution is a song that stops before the story. Deciding to start over takes an afternoon. Doing it takes a year of ordinary mornings where nothing visible improves, and that stretch is almost never written about because it has no chorus in it.

The songs on this page that do the most work are the ones set in that gap — “Built From The Bottom” and “Never Stop” in particular, which are about continuing rather than deciding.

Starting over is not the same as moving on

Moving on implies the thing is behind you. Starting over means it is still with you and you are building anyway, which is both harder and more common. “Pain Turns Into Gold” and “Gold Beneath The Scars” are written from that position: the damage stays, and it becomes material.

Questions people ask

What are good country songs about starting over?

From Richard Dall's catalog: "Make a Change", "More Than One Road", "Built From The Bottom", "You Left, I Rose", "The Road I Had to Take" and "Never Stop".

What is the difference between starting over and moving on?

Moving on implies the thing is behind you; starting over means it is still with you and you are building anyway. The second is harder and far more common, and it is what these songs are about.

Are these songs about recovery?

They are about rebuilding a life after work, money or a relationship has fallen apart. They are not treatment or advice, and if you are dealing with something heavier than a hard stretch, a person is better than a playlist.
