Country songs about divorce
Most divorce songs are written by the person who was wronged. These are mostly written by the one who did the wronging, which is a harder song and a rarer one.

The rarest divorce song
Country is full of songs by the person who was left. There are very few by the person who caused it and is not asking to be forgiven — and that is the one that actually tells you something, because it has no comfort in it for the singer.
“She Deserves Better” and “Paying For The Damage” are written from that position. Neither resolves. That is deliberate: a song that ends in absolution would be a lie about how this works.
What makes these land rather than wallow
Specificity and no self-pity. The moment a lyric asks the listener to feel sorry for the narrator, the song is over. Stating plainly what was done, without decorating it, leaves the judgment to the person listening — which is the only version of this that an adult can sit through.

Questions people ask
What are good country songs about divorce?
From Richard Dall's catalog: "She Deserves Better", "Paying For The Damage", "Same Mistakes", "What We Never Said" and "Sweetest Damage". Most are written from the perspective of the person who caused the break rather than the one who was left.
Why are most country divorce songs written from the wronged side?
Because it is the easier song — the listener's sympathy is already there. A song from the person who caused it has to earn attention without asking for pity, which is why there are far fewer of them.
What makes a regret song work instead of wallow?
Stating what was done plainly and not asking the listener to feel sorry for the narrator. The moment it asks for sympathy, the song stops being honest.
