One More Hill

This is the song the whole album leans on. A man wakes up with less than he had, dusts off his hands, and looks at the road that is still there in front of him. Nothing is fixed. Everything hurts. He walks anyway.

Richard Dall sings it low and steady, that warm baritone sitting close to the ground while the drums keep an even, walking pace. There is no rescue in it, no easy turn where the sky opens. There is only the choice to take the next rise, and then the one after that. The pain stays honest. So does the dignity.

A man can lose his place without losing his spine.

The mood is dusk and gravel, the country-soul edge of a modern outlaw who has been knocked down and stopped counting. It is a father's song, a worker's song, a song for anyone who has watched something they built come apart and decided to keep going.

If you have ever been at the bottom of the day with more distance still to cover, this one is for you. It does not promise the top. It promises you can stand up and climb.
